Days of Glory
Last year I mentioned the film Les Enfants du Pays which is about African soldiers who fought for France during WWII. Well I'm happy to report that a film on the same subject Days of Glory is up for an Oscar as the year's best foreign language film. Check out the audio report at NPR. It talks about how Africans were given 1/10 the pension as French soldiers and basically used as canon fodder. Brings to mind this quote:
The first "unknown" corpse exhumed at Verdun turned out to be Senegalese, so he was reburied and replaced by a white body.
